Orthodontics is the department which is engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of the aesthetics and functional disorders of the teeth, jaw and mouth structures. Orthodontic disorders may depend on the bad array of the teeth on the jaw and also the unconformity between the jaws. The situation occurred as a result of the deformation of the proper alignment of the teeth on the jaws is called as crowding or the lack of space. The crowding causes aesthetics problems and also makes the oral hygiene difficult. The increase in the decays and periodontal diseases is observed when the oral hygiene could not be ensured sufficiently. This negative case results in some problems such as the loss of teeth. Besides this, orthodontic disorders lead up to the muscle and joint problems because an ideal jaw-closing could not be ensured.
Unconformities between the jaws are the skeletal-related problems, disorders forming as a result of the abnormal skeletal development of one or both jawbones. The treatment of the skeletal problems depends on directing growth and development via various orthodontic apparatuses, so early treatment is required. The treatment opportunities decrease in the individuals who have completed the growth and development.
What are the symptoms of the orthodontic disorders ?
- Crowding, wrong positioned and unerupted tooth
- Jaw located excessively to the front or to the rear
- Lip and cheek biting
- Front positioned teeth
- No contact between the lower and upper teeth, or their closure in an abnormal manner
- Asymmetric facial appearance
Although satisfactory results are obtained from the patients of all ages, the treatment of some cases is only possible as a result of the surgical procedures. As in all kinds of diseases, early diagnosis has a significant importance in orthodontic disorders, the need for long lasting treatments or surgical applications can be reduced in future as a result of the simple applications to be made at early ages. For this reason, it is recommended that the children go to a regular dental control from the period of mixed dentition (7-8 ages).
Since the orthodontic treatment is a long lasting treatment in general, the doctor-patient relationship comes to forefront.
